Avalanche of Environmental Impacts

Flow chart of the environmental impacts from Crane Ledge Woods development.

Boston Parks Parcel Priority Plan Map of Hyde Park

Many official city documents do not recognize or categorize Crane Ledge Woods as unprotected open space, including this one. However, this map does show the stark inequities neighborhoods surrounding Crane Ledge Woods are already experiencing in terms of climate change impacts and access to public green spaces.

With 24 acres total, and 22 acres of full mature tree canopy, this site absorbs thousands of gallons of stormwater runoff each year.

The tree canopy provides a cooling effect for the neighborhood, reducing the risks of heat related illnesses. Each acre of forest absorbs harmful pollutants, including particulates, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide, providing health benefits such as reduced asthma. The woodland provides a refuge for wildlife and a tranquil place for people to exercise and relieve stress.

Tree Canopy Loss

Hyde Park was the only neighborhood in Boston to have net tree canopy loss in each land use category.
